The GuZoo needs your help and support. Due to a series of financial and legal challenges it has been necessary for the Province of Alberta to seize control of the Animal Collection at the GuZoo, including our license. The Government is in negotiation with PARC (Provincial Archives of Alberta Research Corporation) regarding this situation; they are an animal sanctuary near Trochu. The Government has been helpful in allowing the Zoo to remain open, but our license is in jeopardy and we need your help.
The GuZoo has been a valuable asset for Alberta tourism since it opened in 1990. Thousands of people from around the world have visited us from Japan, Italy, Croatia, Australia and Argentina. Many of our visitors have returned to the GuZoo multiple times. People around the world rely on us as a source for information about animals and we let them down when we cannot do that.
A little about the zoo itself, which needs your support
This zoo-safari park has been entertaining hundreds of thousands of visitors annually from around the world with wild animals such as Siberian tigers, African lions, black bears, snow sheep, ostriches, zebras and many others.
But the main attraction of Guzoo is not an exotic animals themselves, but rather what they are doing with them. This zoo-safari Park has adopted a creative concept of "learn through play", which allows visitors on an interactive basis to communicate with animals, to feed them or even play with them closely. For example, visitors can play in the park's pool with polar bears, swans and pelicans, ride on an elephant or a camel or participate in games with African lions.
The Guzoo was founded by Dr. Claudio D'Angelo who dreamed of creating a "home" for "unadoptable" exotic animals. The zoo's staff consists of over 40 people from all professions, including psychologists, biologists and animal handlers.
In 2000, Dr. D'Angelo was named the best Zoo Director in America by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). In March 2009 Guzoo was awarded another prestigious prize, the Animal Humane Society's "No More Homeless Pets Award."
Since 2002, many of its animals have been transferred to zoos around North America. Staff say that every animal in the zoo was abandoned, abused or orphaned and therefore could not survive in nature. Now they have found a temporary home here, where he is waiting for a permanent zoo or a family.
Many of the sanctuary's animals must be taken care to live in small enclosures, but this is done not because of lack of funding from the management, which has been repeatedly accused by opponents in this regard. The problem lies in that there are almost no zoos that can accommodate such large and dangerous animals.
Today Guzoo is home to over 400 animals of more than 100 species, the vast majority of which are dangerous and exotic. Visitors can see polar bears, lions, tigers, zebras and ostriches just behind the fence, which can be overcome at any moment.
Guzoo currently has the largest collection of Siberian tigers in North America, one species that is now on the verge of extinction due to poaching and human encroachment into their habitat. The sanctuary has already saved several species from extinction, but if they are not transferred to zoos around North America, they may die.
The zoo works together with some of the world's largest educational and scientific institutions such as the University of Calgary, as well as more than 20 zoological parks in North America to provide the necessary materials for their specialists and create opportunities for young veterinarians.
